One of the honorary combat awards of the USSR during World War II
(Орден Отечественной войны). Instituted 20 May 1942 (c. 1943 issue). A five-pointed star constructed of red enamel and silver with silver rays between each arm, an upward-facing crossed sword and rifle also lay behind the five-pointed enamel star, the obverse centre bears a gold sickle and hammer superimposed on red enamel, a white enamel borders it with the inscription “отечественная война” (Patriotic War), the obverse bears the mint mark “монетный двор” (Monetny Dvor) and is numbered 1575993, with screw back, measuring 45.73 mm (h) x 43.92 mm (w).
